This workshop examines the life and tea taste of Furuta Oribe, a famous samurai warrior and master of chanoyu, in consideration of the 400th anniversary of his death. Oribe was a devoted disciple of Sen no Rikyu, but was known for his own distinctive tastes, which had a major impact on ceramic tea wares and other art forms. In this month's workshop, we will discuss the life of Oribe and his relationships with other powerful political and cultural figures of his time, then look at examples of tea utensils, architecture, and other arts that demonstrate his unique aesthetic taste. Finally, we will consider the legacy of his style of tea and his artistic preferences as they have been carried on to the present day.
The lecture and discussion will be followed by an Oribe-themed tea in the tatami room.
